Overview

Exercise and sports scientists are professionals that apply the science of exercise and sport to assess and improve health, fitness, well-being and performance. This unit will introduce students to the professions of exercise and sport science and provide them with foundational knowledge in ethics, research design and analysis to begin their journey toward becoming evidence-based practitioners. Students will also be introduced to the scope of practice of professions within the exercise and sport science industry and how these professions fit within the broader health and sport landscape.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Investigate the roles, distinguishing characteristics, and scope of practice of various exercise and sport science professions;
  2. Exhibit understanding and reflect upon on the importance of ethical and evidence-based practice to achieve optimal outcomes in exercise and sport science;
  3. Appraise and interpret peer-reviewed research relevant to exercise and sport science, demonstrating a foundational understanding of ethical guidelines, research design and data analysis; and
  4. Participate in an academic community through reflective and critical engagement in academic texts and understanding of principles of academic integrity.

The portfolio involves the completion of short worksheets demonstrating theoretical and practical applications of research in the profession of exercise and sport science. In-class test will examine students’ understanding of the roles and scope of practice for different exercise and sport science careers, evidence-based practice and research methods through a series of multiple choice, true or false, and short answer questions. The presentation is a group task that will require students to reflect on the role of an exercise or sport science professional, considering scope of practice, their role in an interdisciplinary environment and demonstrating understanding of evidence-based practice and research principles.
