Overview

ROP8003 Doctoral Industry Project Placement is an elective unit for post Confirmation of Candidature students within both the PhD and PhD (Integrated) programs at VU and is a key element of the VU Doctoral Industry Experience Program (DIEP). Through involvement in a relevant industry project, the unit provides doctoral students an opportunity to capitalise on and extend the transferable skills developed throughout the research process and to become explicitly externally focused – toward industry, the workplace and wider social concerns. In the context of working on a project in a professional workplace, students will consolidate the transferable skills needed to successfully undertake and complete doctoral research: problem solving, team work, effective communication and systematic work practices.

ROP8003 Doctoral Industry Project Placement should be focused around the student’s involvement in a particular project and be relevant to the student and of value to the Host Industry Partner. Students will only be eligible for the Doctoral Industry Project Placement where they are deemed by their Research Institute to be making quality and timely progress on their doctoral project. The unit (and associated placement) must be completed within the timely enrolment period for the degree and not impede timely submission.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Prepare for integration into host organisation context in a professional manner;
  2. Develop, apply and extend transferable knowledge in host organisation context;
  3. Develop, apply and extend transferable skills (e.g., develop collaborative professional relationships, problem solving skills and professional communication skills) in host organisation context; and
  4. Reflect on their career development in their internship and set future professional goals.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

ROP8003 Doctoral Industry Project Placement unit will be assessed by Academic Programs in VU Research.

Where the placement is organised by the Australian Mathematical and Science Association (AMSI) via the APR Intern Scheme, AMSI will also contribute to the assessment. AMSI has been contracted by the Australian Government to manage an internship scheme for graduate researchers in Australian universities.
