Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to repair potholes in civil construction, including preparing, repairing and cleaning up potholes to sub-grade level.
It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
• repair potholes on at least three occasions, including at least two to sub-grade level, including:
• removing water and loose material from pothole or defective area
• trimming pothole or defect and checking and confirming mechanical interlock of repair material
• applying binder for appropriate adhesion of repair material and waterproofing of repaired area
• placing and compacting materials according to job and site requirements
• cleaning repaired area, removing excess loose materials and applying sand or blinding material according to site requirements.
During the above, the candidate must:
• locate and apply required documentation, policies and procedures
• implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for pothole repairs, including:
• identifying and applying relevant drawings and job specifications to all work activities
• identifying, obtaining, confirming and positioning of required signage
• selecting and checking tools and equipment to meet job requirements
• work with others to repair potholes in a way that meets requirements, including:
• preparing for and organising work activities that meet task requirements
• communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions
• using communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.
