Overview

This unit offers an introduction to the varied developments in world architecture from pre-historic settlements to the late twentieth century, focusing on the discipline's theoretical, historical, and cultural contexts. It examines influential architectural projects, theoretical writings, and design practices throughout this period. Students will explore these global influences on Australian architects and the evolution of architectural movements within Australia, establishing a foundational understanding of both global and Australian architectural history. Additionally, the unit acknowledges and examines the perspectives and contributions of diverse cultures, inclusive of First Nations Peoples, in shaping architectural discourse and practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Interpret key world architectural works, cultural movements and ideas, their theoretical and cultural context and relate their relevance to design;
  2. Critically review and evaluate a selected range of social, cultural, and political factors in relation to Australian architecture, particularly with respect to First Nations Peoples;
  3. Elucidate complex design ideas through verbal, visual and written means; and
  4. Analyse a wide range of architectural problems and situations.

RECOMMENDED TEXTS: Architecture: From Prehistory to Post-Modernism, Authors: Marvin Trachtenberg, Isabelle Hyman, 1986 A very comprehensive set of notes will be available for most topics. These notes will contain further references and reading material.
