Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to set up, operate and maintain edge banding machines which use automated processes to apply and process an edge trim to solid timber or manufactured board.Workers with this competency follow established procedures in timber technology industries, using discretion, judgement and problem solving to identify and resolve routine product and machine issues.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • set up and operate an automated (not fully automatic) edging machine to apply at least 3 different edge treatment materials
  • complete operator maintenance at least once, including:
  • checking that guards, safety switches, and machine jigs and attachments are functioning correctly
  • servicing machine lubrication points
  • identifying tooling needing sharpening and repair
  • checking that drive belts are undamaged and correctly tensioned
  • cleaning machine at the end of a production run
  • checking that electrical systems are functioning, and identifying issues for referral to qualified electrician
  • completing maintenance documentation.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic e-Learning system.
