Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select and use hand and power tools to perform common furniture making tasks such as cutting, joining, planning and sanding wood and other materials. It includes tool safety and basic tool sharpening. Workers with this competency complete routine tasks in industries such as cabinet and furniture making and wood machining.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each units learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • choose appropriate hand tools and safely and efficiently use them to industry standards on at least 2 separate occasions for furniture making tasks, including at least nine (9) of the following tools:
  • chisel
  • file or rasp
  • claw, Warrington or tack hammer
  • plane
  • saw
  • holding tool
  • levelling equipment
  • mallet
  • marking-out and measuring tools
  • scraper
  • screwdriver
  • choose appropriate power tools and use safely to industry standards on at least 2 separate occasions for furniture making tasks, including at least 5 of the following tools:
  • brad, nail or staple gun
  • drill and impact driver
  • biscuit or domino joining machine
  • multi-tool
  • planer
  • router
  • trimmer
  • belt or orbital sander
  • circular, drop or jig saw
  • conduct operator maintenance on hand and power tools, including:
  • grinding and sharpening 2 of the following:

    chisel
    drill bit
    hard plane blade

  • changing and setting up cutters in a planer or router
  • changing the blade on a power saw.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic e-Learning system.
