This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to write and trial programs for numerically controlled (NC) and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining centres.
The program may use common M and G codes and includes the programming of advanced operations, using canned cycles and sub-routines. Programs are trialled and edited as necessary to adjust operation of centre. Technical difficulties are resolved in consultation with appropriate technical advisers.
Where the selection and use of power tools/hand held operations is required unit MEM18002 Use power tools/hand held operations should also be selected.
Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.
Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:
• following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
• identifying and interpreting specifications, charts, lists, drawings and other applicable reference documents in programming numerically controlled (NC) and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining centres
• calculating coordinates for tooling and producing operation sheets for the program and process
• writing NC/CNC program in standard code format and incorporating, where appropriate, canned cycles and sub-routines
• producing NC/CNC operation sheets in accordance with SOPs
• operating the machine centre to test it operates to specification including undertaking any required editing of the program
• checking components or products for conformance to specifications.
The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
