Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to meet the assessed health care needs of people with acute health conditions.

This unit applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) regulatory authority legislative requirements.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
• or one or more persons with an acute health condition:
• analyse health information and the clinical presentation to reach an accurate conclusion on possible health care planning and nursing interventions related to their acute health condition in consultation with a registered nurse
• perform nursing interventions for acute health treatment in the workplace including pre-operative preparation and post operative care
• implement nursing interventions including:
• monitoring of vital signs and neurological observations
• assessing chest pain
• inserting and removing indwelling urinary catheter (IDC)
• replacing, removing and shortening a drain device
• analyse health information and clinical presentation of one Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person to reach an accurate conclusion on possible culturally safe health care planning and nursing interventions.

The tasks must be undertaken in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) professional practice standards, codes and guidelines.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VUPolytechnic and/or via the VU Polytechnic e-learning system.
