This unit encourages students to integrate existing knowledge and skills and expand on these for clients presenting with eating, drinking and swallowing concerns. This unit will explore the assessment and interventions that support successful eating, drinking and swallowing in a range of indirect, consultancy, and advocacy-based speech pathology in working with clients across the lifespan and from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and cultures. Clients encompasses individuals, families and communities. The unit will explore speech pathology case studies necessitating consideration and interrogation of a range of professional and ethical issues and the role of the speech pathologist alongside that of other professionals. This unit will continue to explore issues and methods related to assessment and measurement of efficacy and effectiveness of interventions in an increasingly holistic context. Eating, drinking and swallowing concerns will also be considered in the broader professional, regulatory, ethical and legal contexts in which speech pathology practice occurs. This unit will involve the completion of four days of professional practicum both internal and external to the university.
