Overview

This unit prepares students to transition from academic learning to professional engagement within the justice sector. It focuses on developing the ethical judgement, self-awareness and communication skills essential for effective and culturally responsive practice. Students explore the dynamics of professionalism and identity in justice contexts, learning to navigate complex interpersonal, organisational and ethical challenges including situations that test personal values and professional boundaries. Through applied and experiential learning, students engage in reflective activities, simulated workplace scenarios and role-plays that build capability in conflict management, de-escalation and trauma-informed practice. The unit also explores workers’ rights and the ethical use of emerging technologies such as AI, with industry engagement embedded throughout to connect learning to real-world expectations, professional standards and recruitment processes. Together, these experiences lay the foundation for accountable, human rights–oriented and work-ready practice in contemporary justice settings.
