Overview

This unit of study is designed to provide students with an understanding of theories and methods in cognitive and biological psychology and further training in research methods. The cognitive psychology component aims to extend students' knowledge of learning and cognition, perception and brain-behaviour relationships. The basic principles and methods of psychological assessment will also be examined. The research methods component provides students with training in quantitative research methods including theory and application. Students will develop an understanding of techniques of data collection, data entry, data analysis, statistical programs and report writing.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Contextualise and critique core concepts, perspectives and common experimental paradigms in cognition and cognitive assessment;
  2. Deliberate on brain-behaviour relationships in the context of brain structure;
  3. Evaluate and apply a variety of research methods including statistical procedures; and
  4. Integrate key cognitive concepts including perception, attention, mental imagery, memory, reasoning, and language.
