This unit of study focuses on advanced skills for effective instrumental music instruction in one-to-one and group settings. Focusing on instrumental teaching, the unit explores pedagogical principles, learning theories, effective communication techniques, practical strategies and adaptive approaches to suit different ages, abilities and learning styles. Through observation, reflection and peer teaching, you gain hands-on experience preparing lessons, delivering instruction and providing constructive feedback. You will critically examine the roles of the teacher and learner and engage in reflective practice. You are asked to consider and discuss the role of technology in teaching popular music.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Design and present advanced instrumental music lessons that effectively integrate pedagogical strategies for both one-to-one and group settings, demonstrating adaptability to diverse learning needs and styles;
  2. Critically evaluate and adapt a range of teaching resources and technologies to enhance student engagement, learning outcomes, and instructional effectiveness in music education contexts;
  3. Plan, manage, and reflect on the preparation, delivery, and assessment of instrumental music lessons;
  4. Synthesise contemporary research and teaching theories to inform personal teaching approaches and professional decision-making in complex learning environments.
