Overview

This unit explores the rich and transformative journey of rock music, tracing its roots from early rhythm and blues to its explosive rise in the mid-20th century and its lasting impact on contemporary popular music. Through a multi-disciplinary lens, you will unpack the sound, culture, and legacy of rock music by integrating musicology, music technology, music theory, and music performance.Youth identity and rebellion shaped early rock music, from the electrifying energy of Chuck Berry’s guitar riffs to the boundary-pushing studio work of The Beatles. You will analyse key artists, songs, and moments that amplified both the volume and influence of popular music.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Analyse basic musicological concepts in a range of rock music contexts;
  2. Contextualise the function and value of rock music in academic and social settings;
  3. Articulate intermediate musical nomenclature in relation to the practice and production of musical texts;
  4. Devise and adapt musical works that endeavour to convey meaning.
