Fergus O’Connor, Assistant Sport Scientist at the Western Bulldogs, capitalised on VU’s practical placement opportunities to pursue his dream career in the elite sport industry – as well as postgraduate study.
"Prior to commencing my Bachelor of Exercise Science at Victoria University, I had developed a strong interest in working within the elite sporting industry. I realised I had a passion for Exercise Science and was determined to make this ambition a reality.
During my studies, I obtained a placement with the St Kilda Football Club. Although my role was predominantly observational, it served to strengthen my passion for exercise science. From this point I could immediately see the value in professional networking and workplace placements.
At the beginning of my final year, the opportunity arose for a placement period with Football Federation Victoria, which I applied for and was lucky enough acquire. I also applied for a Sports Science Cadetship at the Western Bulldogs, which I was also fortunate enough to acquire. The opportunity to work with elite athletes was something that I thoroughly enjoyed and a fantastic learning environment for me.
At the completion of my undergraduate studies, I was offered a role as an assistant sport scientist with the Western Bulldogs Football Club. My position entails full time work in the Sports Science division in conjunction with completing an Honours year of study.
If I could give any advice to students, it would be to take each and every opportunity that you can. The opportunities are presented to you and it is up to you to get the best out of yourself."
