Study at VU

Hitting the ground running in sports engineering

Sports engineer Alex Henderson has combined his love of soccer and interest in sport technology to enjoy an exciting career in research and industry.

"My favourite sport is soccer and I always had an interest in the technology associated with sport. When I saw VU had a sports engineering degree running I couldn’t believe my luck.

The course offered me the opportunity to combine my passion for sport and technology. During my 12 week work placement I assisted with the development of a running shoe and armband capable of detecting different running techniques. This project improved my knowledge of algorithm development for human event detection and helped me land my first full-time job with a company that uses GPS and inertial sensors to monitor athlete performance.

I now work with a sport data company that provides insight for Football Federation Australia (FFA) in their quest to grow soccer in Australia. I also work as a research assistant at VU, evaluating the mechanical properties of football boots. The aim of the project is to design new boots to facilitate enhanced performance. My goal is to one day own my own sport technology company that has a global impact on sport performance and the needs of Paralympic athletes."
