Shavini Kumarawansa overcame personal tragedy to become a successful lawyer, and now uses her expertise to support those who need her help the most.

“It was my dream to study law. I loved to read, I enjoyed debating, and I could never sit quietly by and witness injustice. I felt passionately about helping marginalised people.

During Year 12, my dad passed away. This greatly impacted my studies and ultimately my ATAR. VU was more accessible which meant I could still start my law degree straight away.

I was given special consideration on exams and assignments, and extra support from lecturers. The lecturers were so approachable, and skilled in teaching technical legislation in an easily understandable way.

During my degree, I worked part time at a law firm, where I gained experience and industry connections.

I am now a senior associate at a large immigration law firm. Migrating from Sri Lanka at six years of age, and growing up predominantly in Australia, I understand how privileged our lives are here. I am so happy to be helping people who have endured great trauma and hurdles achieve their dream of living in Australia.”
