Healthy ambitions

Lauren Cornall is discovering new treatments for chronic diseases as part of her PhD research.

"VU’s nutritional therapy degree offered great opportunities for my career development including workplace learning in clinics.

I graduated with honours in 2009 and went on to do my honours year in biomedical science research. My supervisors and VU staff supported and encouraged me to continue with postgraduate studies.

I received a scholarship from the National Heart Foundation of Australia to undertake my PhD at VU researching new treatments for obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. I am also completing the Master of Science in Dietetics.

I was a semi-finalist for the 2013 BASF Science and Technology Award, and am currently a finalist in the 2014 Award catergory as part of the Victorian Young Achievers Awards. Being recognised among my peers in the state meant a lot.

I also tutor and mentor students. I hope to continue in this role to help train and develop future scientists."
