Following in his sister’s footsteps, Indonesian student Steven Tan made the move to Victoria University (VU) in 2014 to study business.

"My sister was studying nursing here so my parents wanted me to come to VU too because she enjoyed it so much," Steven, from West Java, says.

"Moving to a new country, it was a lot easier for me to settle knowing I had family here," he says.

Steven completed the one-year Diploma of Business (Enterprise) VDBE at VU College in 2014, which then enabled him to transfer into the second year of the Bachelor of Business (Accounting) in 2015.

The Diploma of Business (Enterprise) VDBE is one of three VU College higher education diplomas offered to international students. Following successful completion of a diploma in business, IT or engineering, students are provided direct entry to the second year of the correlating bachelor degree at VU.

Now in his final semester of the bachelor, Steven says he has not only enjoyed the course, but also the first-class facilities at VU’s Footscray Park campus.

"I really like Footscray Park because it is a beautiful campus and there are lots of sports facilities – the gym and swimming pool are really cool."

Networking and making friends, Steven says, is crucial for international students living and studying in a new country.

Study is very important but connections are important as well. If you want to work in the real world you can’t just rely on your study knowledge, you need to have good social and industry connections.
