Calculating a rewarding career

The training, practical skillset and relationships that I gained at VU helped to shape the accountant that I am today and the path my career has taken to date.

Bachelor of Business (Accounting)

Sarah DeFazio's Business degree afforded her the practical experience which gave her a distinct advantage in the accounting industry.

“During high school I was unsure of what career path I would take. Even when I started VCE I first elected design and art classes, but within the first few weeks I realised it wasn’t for me. I switched into business subjects and had a great accounting teacher, which led to good grades and ultimately studying VU's Bachelor of Business (Accounting).

My degree enabled me to learn the fundamentals of accounting, legislation and ethics.

But one of the best things about VU's Business degree is the 12-month work-integrated learning (WIL) experience in third year. That allowed me to put my skills to use in a practical sense, and develop further beyond the classroom.

I undertook my WIL year at BSA Partnership, and really benefited from the insights I gained into working in public practice. It also provided a head start to my accounting career as they offered me a full-time accounting position prior to graduation.

Working in public practice while completing my Chartered Accounting accreditation gave me a competitive advantage. I have since had the privilege to work with companies that align with my personal interests, including fashion – with Misha Collection – for several years. It was exciting to be exposed to the design, production, marketing, and the glamour of the brand.

That role was the perfect lead-in to my current role of senior management accountant at ST. Ali – one of Melbourne’s highly-regarded coffee institutions. ST. Ali’s great footprint in the hospitality industry and strong brand awareness means there is always something interesting happening within the business that requires my input.

The training, skillset and relationships that I gained at VU helped to shape the accountant that I am today and the path my career has taken.

VU is highly regarded in the accounting profession, and has strong networks with many successful firms and businesses looking for graduate accountants.”
