The close links to industry at VU, including placement opportunities, made my learning experience more relevant and enriching.
Mary Kaneshan
Certificate III in Health Administration HLT37315
After arriving in Australia from Sri Lanka as a refugee, Mary Kaneshan felt a drive to help others.
She enrolled in a Certificate III in Health Administration HLT37315 at Victoria University (VU), helping her build the foundational knowledge and skills for a career in healthcare.
Choosing a supportive and diverse learning environment
“As a refugee I gained firsthand experience with the Australian healthcare system. This, combined with a strong desire to contribute meaningfully to the community, cultivated my interest in health administration.
I chose VU due to its strong reputation for practical training and its commitment to supporting diverse student backgrounds. I was also drawn in by the support services, an important factor for me.”
Finding value in hands-on learning
“VU’s hands-on learning experiences have helped me solidify my understanding of real-world workflows.
The opportunity to apply theoretical concepts within simulated healthcare environments, such as the medical lab simulation, has really helped me build confidence in performing essential administrative tasks, such as patient registration and record management.
By practicing these skills, I feel much better prepared to transition into a real-world healthcare workplace and contribute effectively from day one.
This practical focus, coupled with the guidance of supportive and knowledgeable instructors, has made the learning experience really engaging.”
Getting ready for placement at the Royal Melbourne Hospital
Mary is set to start her placement at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in the last week of May.
“The close links to industry, including placement opportunities, have offered valuable insights into current practices and career pathways, making my learning experience more relevant and enriching.
After my placement, I hope to use my Certificate III in Health Administration as a foundation to pursue further studies and eventually work in a patient-facing administrative role within a hospital or community health centre.”

Building confidence for a career in health
“Studying health administration has equipped me with a variety of essential skills. I’ve developed a strong understanding of medical terminology, which is crucial for accurate communication and documentation.
I’ve also gained knowledge in patient record management and appointment scheduling which are all vital for the smooth operation of a healthcare facility. I’ve learned about the legal and ethical considerations within the healthcare environment, ensuring I understand the importance of patient confidentiality and data protection.”
