Though she didn't know it at the time, a research project on autism would become the catalyst for Prishni Dobee’s rewarding and successful career.

The former international student graduated with a Bachelor of Psychological Studies (Honours) from Victoria University (VU) in 2013, and now works as a registered psychologist at a school for children with autism and at a Melbourne sports clinic.

“With my supervisor’s support I completed a research project on autism, a field which I developed a passion for early on during my studies,” Prishni, originally from Mauritius, recalls.

"I am currently head of the multidisciplinary team at Bullen Heights School, responsible for the health and wellbeing of all staff and students, and I also work at a sports clinic and offer counselling to children as well as adults diagnosed with mental health issues,” she says.

“I am grateful for having these rewarding jobs; however, one day, I would like to be the leading professional in the field of special education in my home country, Mauritius, where my expertise is required.”

A valuable asset to VU, Prishni served as treasurer and vice-president of the VU Psychology Society during her studies. She was also employed by the University as an academic support worker and student contact officer, the latter of which was spent counselling students on issues relating to fees, enrolments and exams.

At VU, I learnt how to develop my communication skills, handle challenging situations and become more confident. My time at VU helped me to understand that a supportive environment helps an individual thrive, which is true in my case.

Prishni says she is forever grateful for her experiences at VU, both as a student and staff member.

“VU taught me how to work hard and aim high for my dreams.

“The environment at VU is friendly, supportive and nurturing – everything which a student needs to learn, grow and develop as an individual.”
