Graduate Diploma in Migration Law

Driven by a passion for helping others navigate Australia’s migration system, Jaspreet Kaur founded her own firm – Nextwave Migration – after completing a Graduate Diploma in Migration Law at Victoria University.

A path to migration law shaped by personal experience

“I come from a diverse international education and professional background, having studied and worked across India and Australia.

My own migration journey and the challenges I experienced and observed around me sparked a deep interest in helping others navigate this complex landscape.

I realised that migration law could empower individuals and families, and I wanted to be a part of that life-changing journey. "I thought, ‘I want to do something I love!’

Founding her own business to help others

“I founded my Melbourne-based consulting firm Nextwave Migration with a clear vision to empower people through ethical, compassionate and personalised migration services.

I established the company after completing my studies at VU and gaining firsthand experience in the field. I saw a gap in the market for migration services that prioritise not just outcomes, but empathy and ethical guidance.

We help clients from diverse backgrounds and handle all types of Australian visas. Since its inception, we have grown significantly, receiving recognition for excellence and impact.

Running your own business is hard work, but if you enjoy what you do and have a stake in your success, it doesn’t seem like a chore. As the saying goes, choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life!

Migration law has been one of the most fulfilling paths of my life. Seeing clients reunite with their loved ones, start new careers or secure their future gives me immense joy.

Some highlights include being a finalist in national awards such as the Small Business Champion Awards 2023 and 2025 and being the finalist in the 2022 Hume City Council Hume Business Awards.”

Why are migration agents important?

“Migration agents play a vital role in ensuring that people are not misled or overwhelmed by the intricacies of immigration law.

We are not just advisors. We are advocates, educators, and supporters. A skilled and ethical agent can mean the difference between a successful outcome and a devastating loss of opportunity.

A good migration agent is ethical, patient and proactive in navigating both the system and the client's individual circumstances. They must be resilient and adaptable to constant policy changes and above all, they must be trustworthy.

We help people achieve dreams, reunite with family and build new lives with clarity and confidence. Empathy, attention to detail, legal acumen and strong communication skills are essential.

My day includes client consultations, complex legal case analysis, liaising with government departments, team management and staying updated with changing policies.

One of the biggest challenges is adapting to constant legislative changes and ensuring clients receive timely accurate advice. But every challenge brings an opportunity to grow stronger as a team and as a professional."

What’s next in Australian migration law?

“I see the future of migration law becoming more technology-driven, but with a greater need for human-centric services.

I hope to contribute to policy reform and mentor the next generation of migration professionals. I aim to expand Nextwave Migration’s impact across Australia and globally, while advocating for ethical practices in the migration industry.

My vision includes continuing to contribute to the success and integrity of the migration law profession and help more people realise their visa objectives.

My clients’ success is my success. After 10 years I am still as passionate about migration law today as I was all those years ago.”

Why choose VU for migration law?

“VU provided me with more than academic knowledge. It gave me practical insights into real-world migration cases and the legal framework surrounding them.

The coursework and support from the faculty gave me a strong legal foundation, while also nurturing my ability to approach each case with critical thinking and compassion. This preparation has been invaluable in dealing with the complexities of the migration system. You'll get to enjoy a supportive learning environment that fosters excellence, no matter your educational background. The lecturers and teaching methods are inspiring. My own success is a testament to this.

I chose VU because of its outstanding reputation in legal education, its commitment to practical learning and the flexibility it provided as a working professional. The course structure and teaching approach at VU gave me the confidence that I would receive both academic and hands-on migration training.”
