Did you know that a love of sport – as an athlete or a spectator – doesn’t need to be left on the field? Business student and basketballer Lauren Tipper is discovering the increasing number of exciting career opportunities in and around sport.

Lauren shares how she’s already benefitting from VU’s practical approach and strong industry partnerships, including her placement with Wyndham Basketball Association.

“Along with my love for playing basketball, I’ve always had a passion for organising events.

I chose Victoria University because its Business degree offers a diverse range of majors including those I chose, event management and marketing.

I was also really drawn to VU for the Block Model. The VU Block Model gives me the flexibility to continue working and playing sports while completing my degree. It gives me more freedom and control over my studies, as we complete just one unit (subject) at a time.

I completed my Work Integrated Learning with VU partners, Wyndham Basketball Association. Through my placement as a sponsorships coordinator, I gained real-world expertise, helping to organise the under-18 Australian Basketball Championships event.

This internship was critical to the success of my degree: it’s given me experience and confidence in my career and helped me develop connections within the industry.

During the course, we’re taught things in a practical way – that’s the best preparation for when we branch out into our different professions.

When I finish my degree in 2022, I aim to find work within the event management industry. Thanks to VU I already feel ready. I’m so looking forward to what lies ahead!”
