Megan Buttigieg completed a Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management).
Workplace learning: Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
"The Business and Law Co-op Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program at Victoria University has paved a rewarding and challenging career path for me that has already led to a promotion within the Schools HR Services Unit at the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
During my WIL placement I learnt the day-to-day operations of Schools HR and completed tasks that gave me a clear understanding of the Human Resources industry. I worked full-time and studied part-time throughout my yearlong WIL program, and I applied the theoretical skills I gained during my course to my job.
One of my highlights was supporting schools that were affected by the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. My task was to create personal files for all teachers who had lost their paperwork, and help them in any way possible. It was very fulfilling as I was able to help people through a very difficult period.
I also helped roll out the Department's new payroll system, which was exciting as I suggested innovative solutions to improve the software. This allowed me to polish my networking and communication skills and build my confidence.
When I graduated I was offered – and accepted – a graduate position with the Schools HR Services Unit.
VU has a friendly and supportive atmosphere, and my teachers encouraged me to aim for all my goals, including my long term goal of becoming a Human Resources Generalist Manager where I can play an important role in all aspects of HR."
