Former athlete Mat Inness is building a promising coaching career with the help of a VU-Bulldogs PhD scholarship.
"I played professional cricket for more than a decade and needed further education to help me once I retired from the game.
I chose VU because of its links to professional sporting organisations, outstanding research facilities and well-respected staff ‒ my supervisor was one my first teachers during my undergraduate degree.
My PhD, which includes a jointly-funded VU-Bulldogs scholarship, looks at altitude training for enhancing team sport athlete performance.
The strong partnership between VU and the Western Bulldogs has definitely helped my career. Whilst completing my PhD, I worked as strength and conditioning coach with VFL team, the Footscray Bulldogs and was recently appointed Physical Performance Manager at the Western Bulldogs in the AFL.
At VU, students are offered placements at elite sporting teams, elite athletes are supported with flexible study, and sporting clubs get access to facilities and the latest research."
