Writer Demet Divaroren’s new book breaks down cultural stereotypes to celebrate diversity.
"Coming of Age: Growing up Muslim in Australia is a collection of 12 stories by Australian Muslims from diverse backgrounds. My co-editor and I wanted to challenge religious and cultural stereotypes by revealing the human story and the complexities of growing up ethnic and Muslim in multicultural Australia.
The stories deal with universal themes like overcoming bullying, familial and societal expectations and body image to show that the human experience transcends labels. We hope to inspire young people from all faiths and cultures who are trying to forge their own identities.
VU’s Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing gave me the tools, knowledge and support to begin my writing career. Since then I’ve been awarded grants from the Australia Council and my first novel Orayt?, was shortlisted for an Australian Vogel Literary Award.
My goal is to keep creating stories that inspire, connect and create change."
