Masters by Research

A Masters by Research builds on the skills and knowledge developed during undergraduate study. It involves undertaking advanced research in a chosen field, and developing your skills and expertise in both applying and critically evaluating various research methodologies.

While you study, our expert researchers are on hand to provide guidance and supervision, building your confidence as you progress through your research and writing stages.

Course requirements

You are required to submit a 30,000 - 60,000 word thesis.

If your research is in the creative arts (including creative writing, performance or visual arts), your thesis submission can take the form of a creative work with an accompanying exegesis (critical explanation of your work).

Your final result will depend on the examination of your thesis.

Entry requirements

You must have a bachelor degree with a distinction average in the final year, or equivalent qualification and professional experience, demonstrating your capacity to undertake a Masters by Research.

You must also demonstrate English competency sufficient for study at masters level by providing evidence of one or more of the following:

  • completion of one or more degrees with English as the language of instruction and assessment, undertaken in a predominantly English-speaking context (within the last two years)
  • an overall band score of not less than 6.5 in an International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) test with no individual band score below 6.0
  • a score of not less than 92 with no section score less than 22 in the internet-based Teaching of English Foreign Language (TOEFL) test, or English proficiency equivalent
  • other documented proof of English proficiency equivalent to the above.
