A Kirner Scholarship and a Kosky Scholarship will be offered to two young women from Melbourne’s west.

The successful recipients of these scholarships will have faced barriers and challenges in their academic and personal life to complete their primary and secondary education.


Scholarship applications are open to young women who:

  • are an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • are enrolled full-time at VU and in their first year of study
  • live in the western region of Melbourne (within Brimbank, Hobson’s Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham)
  • demonstrate challenges faced and barriers overcome in their academic and personal life
  • demonstrate their university and career aspirations
  • state how the scholarship will assist their university studies.


$5000 per year will be awarded for the duration of the degree, up to a maximum of five years. Plus mentoring from a female community leader.


Applicants will be assessed on how being a recipient of a Kirner Kosky scholarship will assist them in their university studies.

  • curriculum vitae (maximum 2 pages)
  • personal statement (500-750 words) addressing:
    • barriers overcome and challenges faced throughout your primary and/or secondary education
    • reasons for selecting your chosen course of study
    • aspirations and long term goals for university and career
  • reference – contact details for one referee or a written statement supporting your application.
