Advanced Standing is the process for current and prospective higher education students to apply for and gain credit towards their course at Victoria University (VU).

What is Advanced Standing?

Advanced Standing (credit) is used to recognise your prior learning or work and life experience. It reduces the number of units that you have to complete in your chosen higher education course at VU.

If any VU units are granted as Advanced Standing, you will not be required to enrol in those units. This will reduce the total credit points required to complete your course.

VU assesses and grants Advanced Standing in accordance with the Credit – Advanced Standing (HE) Procedure.

How to apply for Advanced Standing

Current students

Please apply for Advanced Standing via your MyVU portal.

If you think that you may be eligible for Advanced Standing in any units, do not enrol into those units. Advanced Standing cannot be processed if the census date has passed for enrolled units. Students will also not be eligible for a refund for those units.

If you are receiving Centrelink payments and the length of your course is reduced as a result of Advanced Standing, you must notify Centrelink.

Prospective students

If you’re applying directly to VU via our Admissions Centre or as an international applicant via our International Application and Enquiry System and would like to apply for Advanced Standing as part of your course application, you will be prompted during the process to complete and upload an Advanced Standing application form along with the required supporting documentation.

If you have applied for a course without submitting an Advanced Standing application and have been granted an offer via VTAC, you should follow the process for current students (explained on this page) as soon as you accept your offer.

If you don’t enrol at VU within 12 months of receiving your offer, you may need to resubmit an Advanced Standing application for any credit previously granted.

Supporting documentation

You will need to provide details for your previous study, work or life experience, including how it satisfies the learning outcome for the units, you have requested as Advanced Standing. For example:

  • a copy of your official academic or completion transcript(s)
  • unit descriptions
  • a current copy of your CV or resume.

Refer to the checklist on page five of the Advanced Standing applicant form (in your MyVU portal) for the full list of supporting documentation required.

We do not require original documents. However, you may be asked to show original documents, at a later stage. Copies do not have to be certified, but must be true and accurate.

If your academic record(s) are from an overseas or a private institute(s), certified copies must be provided from the appropriate government body or professional association recognised in Australia (or an equivalent authority for students studying offshore). Documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by an English translation. The translator must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) or an equivalent body for offshore students.

We may contact your former institution(s) and your current and former employers for further information or clarification of your Advanced Standing application.

Application outcome

Current students will receive an assessment outcome email to confirm what Advanced Standing has been granted.

Prospective students will receive an assessment outcome email once they accept their offer and enrol.

International students

To meet your student visa requirements, you must complete your course within the time stated on your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE).

If the length of your course is reduced as a result of Advanced Standing, your CoE duration will also be reduced. This might impact your visa. It is recommended that you contact the Department of Home Affairs when you receive the updated eCoE.

If your application for Advanced Standing is successful, you will be sent an email asking you to confirm your acceptance of any credit granted before it can be processed against your course.

If you are unsatisfied with the outcome of your application for Advanced Standing, you can request a review of the decision in accordance with the VU Credit Policy.
