About Yuan Miao
Professor Yuan Miao received his PhD from Tsinghua University, Automation Department, and became an associate professor within the Department of Computer Science and Technologies. His academic career further expanded to the University of Melbourne in Australia, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and Victoria University in Australia. He is now a professor in the College of Arts, Business, Law, Education and IT at Victoria University, and the Head of the Information Technology (IT) Discipline.
Yuan's recent research interests are in:
- human knowledge modeling (fuzzy cognitive map, knowledge graph, decision support)
- deep learning and natural language processing, argumentation automation
- conversational human computer interaction (chatbots)
- data driven storytelling and their applications in smart systems, social media mining, sentiment analysis
- health care active living (active ageing)
- cyber security.
Yuan has published 129 peer reviewed papers (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6712-3465). Two of his articles in fuzzy cognitive map modelling have been in the top 10 most cited work from 2000 in the area (Google Scholar 2000-2016). His team developed an adversarial dataset based on SQuAD 2.0, which led to the accuracy drop of BERT and ELECTRA from close to 90% to less than 50%. Yuan's research has been awarded with grant support from industry including Microsoft, Amazon, Oracle, Google and government funding bodies including Australia Research Council, Data61 and Singapore NRF. He is a chief investigator of three ARC grants, one major Victoria government grant (1.25 m) and a partner investigator of a major NRF Singapore grant (1.59 m).
