About Patrick Mclaughlin

Pat has a PhD in biomechanics, having spent the early part of his career in the biomechanics laboratory environment and working with elite sports in the analysis of techniques. This knowledge and experience transferred well into the analysis of gait, especially running gait, and using dynamic pressure measurement techniques, and links well with his interest (and teaching) into the Osteopathy program at VU. With biomechanics being a predominantly quantitative focussed topic area, Pat has also developed and utilised skills in data analysis techniques, including cluster analysis, which has enabled a number of collaborations across discipline areas in health and biomedicine.

Pat's teaching and research focus is within the evidence-informed practice space, where the design of the osteopathy degree at VU has allowed a themed approach to course development, and a scaffolded design in this particular topic area. Students gradually develop their skills at each year level (of 5) in this area, and this “no hurry” approach has greatly enhanced the students' ability to understand the importance of evidence-informed practice, and implement it in their clinical learnings in the postgrad program.

Combined with increasing the focus on evidence-informed practice in the student-led clinic, Pat has been instrumental in bringing into clear focus an answer to the question “why do we have to understand research?”. This has reinforced his approach to providing a link between the theoretical concepts and the application to practice, and has lead to numerous publications.
