Victoria University is pleased to announce its new partnership with The Sport Australia Hall of Fame, focusing on a vision both organisations share to help people maximise their potential.
The partnership will see VU join forces with the Hall of Fame to help spread messages about the importance of healthy and active lifestyles, not just at an elite level, but for all members of the community, young or old.
The partnership comes on the eve of the launch of the University's new Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living (ISEAL) to be located in a world-class research, teaching and training centre at its Footscray Park Campus.
ISEAL Director Professor Hans Westerbeek said the alliance brings invaluable opportunities to build on VU's education and research skills and expertise while using the values and experiences of inspiring Australians to help others realise their potential in sport and life.
"This is a perfect match between two organisations that see the value of recognising the country's great sporting accomplishments and our sporting role models to inspire all Australians to understand the importance of active, healthy lifestyles," he said.
The Hall of Fame's list of inductees includes sporting legends such as Olympic Gold Medallist rower Mike McKay and Olympian and Australian basketball legend Andrew Gaze – both VU alumni – as well as General Members who have played support roles for the athletes.
Sport Australia Hall of Fame Chairman and yacht racing champion John Bertrand said he is delighted with the announcement of this strategic partnership.
"We are excited about the potential of this relationship," he said. "Victoria University is a leader in sport research and education while the Sport Australia Hall of Fame represents the leading athletes of all Australian sports, including Olympic disciplines."
As part of the partnership, VU will also become a proud supporter of Sport Australia Hall of Fame's Scholarships Program, aimed at offering talented young athletes mentoring opportunities from current Hall of Fame members and financial support.
VU students will also have work experience opportunities with the Hall of Fame organisation.
VU will sign the partnership agreement at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame's next major event, the Team Sport Australia Awards at Etihad Stadium on 17 June to recognise teams that have contributed to Australia's reputation as a great sporting nation.
The media are invited to attend.
