A Victoria University information technology expert is the first academic in the world to be awarded the status of "SAP Mentor". SAP is a software system used by large organisations worldwide to manage business operations.
Paul Hawking, a senior lecturer in VU's School of Management and Information Systems, will receive his award at SAP TechEd 2010 in Las Vegas next week. SAP was developed in Germany and is the world's leading enterprise resource planning (ERP) system for consolidating human resources information, finance and other electronic business activities.
"It's estimated that SAP software automates and manages 60 per cent of transactions related to Australia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP)," he said. "There are fewer than 100 SAP mentors globally and I am honoured to be the first academic to achieve this status."
The SAP community network comprises about two million members, including 50,000 active contributors. SAP Mentors are hands-on experts nominated by their peers for their passion for the community, and their willingness to contribute, share and motivate others.
As VU's SAP Academic Program Director, the Albert Park resident is responsible for facilitating curriculum development that incorporates SAP software across the university. VU has achieved a worldwide reputation in its use of SAP software to support its teaching. VU's Masters in ERP Systems is taught in Australia, Singapore, Beijing and shortly India.
Hawking's knowledge is well respected in both industry and academia and he is often asked to assist companies with their ERP strategies. The SAP organisation uses his expertise to teach other academics throughout the region about different aspects of SAP software. In 2009 he was voted one of the Top Ten Most Influential People in SAP in Australia and New Zealand by industry peers.
Hawking is also one of Australia's best-selling IT authors, having written ten books sold throughout the world.
Paul Hawking is available for interview.
