VU celebrates top sports stars

Victoria University has named long-distance runner Liam Adams and golfer Stacey Keating as its 2010 male and female athletes of the year.

The VU Sports Awards recognise the University's best performing student athletes in regional, national and international championships.

Liam, 23, a Moonee Ponds resident, is a seasoned champion in long-distance and cross-country running. This is the second time he has won VU's top male athlete, taking home the award for the first time in 2008, the same year he was named the top university male athlete in the country.

Now in his third year of a Bachelor of Exercise Science and Human Movement at VU's Footscray Park Campus, Liam won silver at this year's World University cross country championships in Canada, and was the first Australian to cross the finish line in the 12-kilometre open men's world cross country championships in Poland – his best performance to date. He also came first in the 10km event at the Australian University Distance Running Championships, held as part of the Melbourne Marathon last October.

VU's Female Sports Person of the Year, Stacey Keating, 24, is in her third year of a Bachelor of Applied Science at Footscray Park. A native of the small town of Cressy, west of Geelong, Stacey is a regarded as one of the country's top female amateur golfers. She was one of two players to receive a prestigious $10,000 Karrie Webb Scholarship for her impressive recent performances, which include winning the women's Australian Amateur championships earlier this year.

VU also awarded several 'full blue' and 'half blue' awards in recognition of exceptional sporting service by University individuals and teams.
