VU and Western Chances offer three more scholarships

Victoria University and Western Chances are funding university degrees for three more students from Melbourne's west as part of the 2010 Western Chances VU Success Scholarship program.

VU Vice-Chancellor Elizabeth Harman, Western Chances founder Terry Bracks, and Western Chances patron and former VU Chancellor the Honourable Justice Frank Vincent will present the scholarships on Monday 19 July at 10am at VU's Sunshine Campus.

The media are invited to attend.

The program offers three fee-free undergraduate places to high-achieving secondary school students from Melbourne's western region every year. The program is now in its third year.

The three students for 2010 are:

  • Hayley Scott, 18, of Altona Meadows. Hayley graduated from Gilmore College for Girls and is studying a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice;
  • Kevin Ly, 19, of Laverton. Kevin graduated from Laverton P-12 College and is studying a Bachelor of Business in Accounting;
  • Three Rose Toke, 20, of Werribee. Three Rose graduated from Werribee Secondary College and is studying a Bachelor of Nursing.

Professor Harman said the program has had a remarkable impact on the western region.

"Our two organisations are symbiotic in that we both like to support and invest in students in Melbourne's west," she said.

The scholarships assist students identified by Western Chances as having special talents or interests, a capacity for achievement, and a demonstrated need for financial assistance.

The program complements VU's achievement scholarships, which provide up to 120 scholarships a year – two to every secondary school in Melbourne's west  – as well as its 500 equity scholarships.
