Victoria University to host Real Madrid Foundation clinic during Champions tour

Young Victorian soccer players will train alongside legendary Real Madrid striker Emilio Butragueño with renowned Real Madrid Foundation coaches in an exhibition clinic in Melbourne’s West Sunday 19 July.

Master coaches from the Real Madrid Foundation, will conduct the clinic with football experts from VU’s Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living (ISEAL).

VU College of Sport and Exercise Science Dean, Professor Hans Westerbeek is thrilled to be hosting this extraordinary event with the Real Madrid Foundation at Footscray Hockey Club on Sunday 19 July.

“It is a great honour to collaborate with the Real Madrid Foundation, and to have world class coaches and football royalty like Butragueño support the passion and skills of the next generation of Australian players,” Professor Westerbeek said.

“We know there is no shortage of soccer interest in Melbourne, with the International Champions Cup games and A-League finals selling out in hours, so we invite all fans of the game to join us Sunday 19 July to check out what will be a remarkable event.”

Real Madrid Institutional Relations Director Emilio Butragueño, who played in two European championships and represented Spain on almost 70 occasions said he is looking forward to seeing the next generation of Australian football stars in action.

“This experience will stay with the lucky young Victorian players throughout their lives and perhaps into their future football careers,” Mr Butragueño said.

The Real Madrid Foundation creates opportunities for young people all over the world to visit Real Madrid Clinics, which use the same training methods as the Real Madrid Football Club.

Fifty star soccer players, aged 12-14 years, have been selected to participate in Victoria’s first Real Madrid Foundation clinic from the local Maribyrnong community and from Football Federation Victoria.

Professor Westerbeek said the Foundation’s enthusiasm for this clinic is another feather in the cap for Australia’s leading sports university, and thanked Maribyrnong City Council for its support of the event, allowing the clinic to be held in VU’s west Melbourne heartland. ENDS
