Victoria University to host new ‘high-tech’ learning centre

Victoria University will help prepare Wyndham secondary school students for high-tech jobs of the future as a host education partner in the Victorian Government’s new ‘tech school’ initiative announced yesterday.

As one of the state’s 10 new Centres of Technological Excellence, up to 12,000 Wyndham high school students will have access to the latest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) education at Wyndham Tech School, in a shared learning and training centre to be located at VU’s Werribee Campus.

Students from Years 7-12 can use the centre for interactive classes and activities, beginning as early as 2017. They will also be offered training opportunities alongside regular schooling.

Wyndham Tech will have an educational focus on the following industries predicted to experience future strong economic and employment growth:

  • health
  • transport and logistics
  • scientific and technical professional services
  • construction

VU Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Dawkins said VU welcomed the opportunity to build on its 100-year history as an educator provider.

“This initiative fits extremely well with VU’s strengths and the needs of Melbourne’s west, and will further enhance the links we already have with schools in the region,” he said.

Wyndham Tech School will leverage partnerships with local organisations including Wyndham City Council, LEADWest and the WynBay LLEN (Local Learning and Employment Network).

The secondary school partners of Wyndham Tech School are:

  • Almanda K-9 College
  • Baden Powel P-9 College
  • Carranballac P-9 College
  • Good Lutheran College
  • Heathdale Christian College
  • Hoppers Crossing Secondary College

The project is currently in an intensive planning and development phase, with a local partnership group working through education and curriculum development, infrastructure design, staffing, technology and equipment requirements.
