Our Career Mentoring Program matches students (mentees) with an industry professional (mentors) to assist in the transition from university to work. It focuses on industry connections in banking, finance and IT.

Through a series of one-on-one mentoring sessions you can gain advice and support with career direction, networking, skills assessment, job hunting and applications.

To be eligible, you must be in your final or penultimate year, with a genuine interest in the IT industry (IBM Program), or be studying an Accounting or Banking and Finance related course (NAB Program).

If these criteria don't match your study areas, you may be able to find a career mentor through our job-ready program, Talent Connect.

How it works

The Career Mentoring Program runs twice a year, with a new group of mentees selected each semester.

Once selected, you (the mentee) attend an induction session and get matched with a mentor.

You will arrange four to six meetings with your mentor, over a period of 6-12 weeks. Each meeting is approximately 60 minutes and takes place in an agreed location and time – usually in the CBD.

The one-on-one mentoring allows you to discuss your career aspirations or concerns and helps prepare you for the transition from university to work.

You will receive ongoing support from VU's Student Career Development team and comprehensive program instruction manuals.

Participation allows you to:

  • discover what employers are looking for in new employees/graduates
  • explore options for work experience, site visits and job shadowing
  • develop professional networks in your chosen discipline
  • raise your awareness of career paths/job options for graduates in your discipline/course
  • improve your interviewing technique
  • develop resumes relevant to your desired industry/job
  • gain knowledge of work/industry expectations and culture.

The program is fully funded for students.
