Basketball Academy

As Leaders in Sport, we are proud of the VU Basketball Academy which brings together state-of-the art sport facilities, sport science capability and teaching expertise with the extensive basketball sporting networks and coaching experience of the Gaze group.

Under the direction of Andrew Gaze (Basketball Director) the Academy has assembled a team of some of the most experienced and reputable professional basketball coaches in Australia.

The Academy experience is designed for experienced basketball players at the representative level. It will provide a world-class program for athletes to reach their basketball potential while completing an industry-focused SIS50612 - Diploma of Sport Development with a basketball option with education pathways and career outcomes.

VU Basketball Academy offerings

  • nationally recognised SIS50612 Diploma Sport Development qualification from Victoria University

As a student at Victoria University, you will join an incredibly diverse, motivated and friendly group of people from all walks of life and all educational backgrounds. We pride ourselves on having teachers who make a point of getting to know you.

Elite student athletes program

VU is a member of the Australian Sports Commission's Elite Athlete Friendly University (EAFU) Network. Our elite athlete support program aims to help you balance study with your training and competition demands, by providing you with access to support and special study arrangements. The Program provides a framework for flexible study and assessment options for eligible student-athletes.

Andrew Gaze (Basketball Director)

Our Basketball Director, Andrew Gaze, is one of basketball’s most highly respected basketball professionals. Andrew has direct input into all on-court coaching and the philosophies and methods used, as well as direct input into the program curriculum.

Andrew’s achievements include being:

  • inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2013
  • a five time Olympian
  • named NBL Most Valuable Player 7 times
  • named Australia’s International Player of the Year 6 times.

Andrew also possesses a wealth of coaching experience and expertise honed with his beloved Melbourne Tigers youth programs over many years and remains an active ambassador and custodian of the game of basketball in Australia.

Nigel Purchase (Basketball Manager)

Nigel Purchase is the Basketball Manager of the VU Basketball Academy. Nigel played for 10 years in the NBL with the Melbourne Tigers. He brings a wealth of experience in sports management and recruitment and a vast basketball network, plus 20 years’ experience as a skills development coach.

Academy structure

A typical week consists of a mix of classroom theory in a blend of:

  • face to face delivery
  • online self-directed study
  • engagement with community in a work integrated learning context.

Much of this learning is boosted in the daily basketball training, strength and conditioning sessions.

The training and gym sessions are carefully balanced in terms of scheduling, volume and intensity. The goal is to balance our athlete’s performance and developmental requirements and the educational outcomes of the program.

Classroom & training sessions

Face to face educational delivery approximately 16-18 hours per week.

Training sessions, approximately 8-10 hours per week, at the following venues:

  • Whitten Oval
  • Footscray
  • Footscray Park campus
  • Footscray Nicholson St campus
  • Broadmeadows and Dandenong (dependent on numbers in 2016).


Potential career options after completing the course are:

  • competition manager

  • professional athlete
  • basketball coach.

Pathways into further studies

Once you have successfully completed the Diploma you have a guaranteed place into one of several corresponding Victoria University degree programs. You will also receive credit transfers for applicable Diploma units you have completed. If you pursue this pathway upon successful completion of your studies you will graduate with two qualifications, a diploma and a degree.

Playing for your local basketball club

VU Basketball Academy coaches and staff encourage playing for your club or association team in conjunction with undertaking your studies and participating in VU Basketball Academy on-court sessions. Our elite athlete program helps you successfully complete your studies while training and competing at an elite level. Our coaches and staff can collaborate with your club or association coaches to help case manage your workload and maximise your personal basketball development.

US Collegiate Basketball Associations

VU Basketball Academy student/athletes can still play in the USA Collegiate Basketball System after having enrolled and completed the SIS50612 - Diploma of Sport Development with a basketball option. US College consultants can assist athletes with more information on a case-by-case basis.
