Academic writing advice

University students are at times exposed to unique writing challenges.

To help you overcome these, we offer guidance through the Learning Hub, including drop-in sessions, workshops and online advice.

Workshops & study groups

The Learning Hub offers a range of workshops and study sessions throughout the year to help you in your studies in a group environment.

Book via the Learning Hub for workshops or drop-in to one of our learning sessions.

Learn about:

  • understanding your assignment topic
  • putting your findings into your own words
  • getting into databases
  • grammar tips
  • structuring your writing
  • referencing
  • exam success tips.

Peer Mentoring

The student mentors who run our Peer Mentoring programs are all currently enrolled as students in courses at Victoria University. They are selected for their academic achievements as well as their desire to contribute to the VU community by running sessions for students like you.

While the sessions themselves are student-only spaces, student mentors are trained by an experienced team of academic support lecturers.

Unit-specific peer mentor support (PASS)

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) are led by students who have previously achieved high grades in the subjects they support. Over the decade that VU has been running them, hundreds of students have improved their grades and increased their friendship circles by attending these sessions. PASS sessions are run weekly throughout semester, commencing in Week 2.

Check Learning Hub online for timetables.

Student Writing Mentors

Student Writing Mentors are on hand in Learning Hubs across five campuses (Footscray Park, St Albans, City Flinders, City Queen and Footscray Nicholson) to help you develop your writing skills.

They can help you with:

  • planning an essay or report
  • interpreting specific essay questions
  • reading over and providing feedback on sections of your work.

Mentors are here to talk to you about your writing and help you clarify your thoughts and intentions, so please visit them early in the writing process. For best results, see us throughout semester, not just when an assignment is due!

Drop-in sessions

Drop-in sessions are there when you need them - no bookings necessary.

Come in to our friendly Learning Hubs between 10am and 6pm Monday to Friday to attend a drop-in session.

Learning Hubs have been purpose-built at Footscray Park, St Albans, City Flinders and City Queen campuses as spaces where you can get advice on your university work and guidance on your career.
