The Victorian Government has announced a $45 million International Student Emergency Relief Fund for international students facing financial hardship due to COVID-19.

International students studying at Victoria University may be eligible for a further $500 grant, in addition to the COVID-19 Student Support Fund that is available through the University.

If you are a current Victoria University (VU) international student experiencing financial hardship, you may be eligible for support up to the value of $500 if you meet the following criteria:

  • Be an international student at VU.
  • Be currently enrolled in your VU course, which commenced on or before 16 March 2020.
  • Have a current student visa that expires after 30 June 2020.
  • Currently live and be physically located in Victoria, Australia.
  • Have been legally employed and working in Victoria in March 2020 and have experienced exceptional circumstances of financial hardship due to coronavirus (COVID-19). The circumstances of hardship arise from:
    • a significant reduction in hours of employment; or
    • loss of employment due to a business shutdown; and
    • you are unable to supplement lost income from other sources of financial support.
  • Provide evidence of loss of employment income such as correspondence between you and your employer (e.g. letters, emails, text messages, pay slips).
  • Provide proof of your current and most up-to-date bank statement.

Application process

To apply for the International Student Emergency Relief Fund you must:

  • complete the International Student Emergency Relief Fund Application form; and
  • email your current bank statement and supporting documents (showing loss of employment income) to [email protected].

Include your VU student ID number and your full name in the subject line of your email to help us to identify your documents and process you application faster.

This one-off $500 grant will be assessed individually, taking into consideration evidence of loss of income and financial hardship. The University will co-contribute funds to the same value if your application is successful and these have not already been awarded via the COVID-19 Student Support Fund.

Do not apply to the COVID-19 Student Support Fund separately.
