As part of VU’s ongoing commitment to support our students through these challenging times, we have launched the COVID-19 Student Support Fund.

This emergency fund was created for students who are most in need. It supports enrolled students studying in Australia in both higher and vocational education.

We are offering one-off grants to eligible students.

Grant value

You may be eligible for the following:

  • Emergency financial grant for students impacted by self-isolation/quarantine requirements or job losses. This grant is for essential living or study expenses related to food, healthcare, textbooks and materials (non-tech) for study up to the value of $100.
  • Technology grant to support students in pursuing studies that have transitioned to digital platforms (e.g. voucher to support the purchase of a WiFi dongle up to the value of $100).
  • Crisis housing support for students who have encountered hardship as a result of the loss of paid employment. Rental assistance grants up to the value of $500.
  • Ongoing financial hardship grant for students who have already applied for one or more of the above grants and are experiencing ongoing financial hardship. This grant has a separate application process and students will be contacted directly by VU to apply. If you have not been contacted already and are experiencing ongoing financial hardship due to COVID-19, please email [email protected] to express your interest in applying. Do not use the application process below for this grant. This grant is up to the value of $500.

These one-off grants will be assessed individually, taking into consideration other grants and support that are already available through existing VU services and programs (e.g. emergency welfare aid, student loans), government schemes, and other funding bodies.

If you are successful, payment will be made as digital vouchers or issued via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) to your bank account, within 5 days of approval.


You are eligible for the grant if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are enrolled full time in a VU Higher Education or TAFE course.
  • You are able to demonstrate that you (or your sponsor for International students) have been impacted by COVID-19.
  • You are able to provide evidence to support your application.
  • The grant would help you to continue your enrolment in your current course.

Apply for the grant

1) Send evidence of hardship

This may include one or more of the following:

  • proof of reduced income as a result of COVID-19 (e.g. bank statements, a separation certificate or similar statement from employer)
  • evidence that COVID-19 has impacted on your capacity to earn money (e.g. quarantine, COVID-19 illness, caring for an immediate family member who has been diagnosed with COVID-19)
  • proof of hardship (e.g. invoice from pharmacist, utility bill in arrears, statement from landlord or real estate agent of arrears, statement from counsellor, welfare adviser, advocate, international student adviser or course adviser).
