Overview

COVID-19 has impacted infection control standards in a range of organisations and industries across the country. Learn essential skills and knowledge to decrease the risk and transmission of infection while undertaking your daily duties, with the Cross-Sector Infection Control Skill Set course at Victoria University Polytechnic.

This course is suitable if you are engaged in direct customer interactions across the security, education and care sectors.

It is nationally accredited training, and include learning to implement standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to infection risks.

In this course, you will gain knowledge and skills in:

  • hand hygiene practices and effective surface cleaning
  • use of personal protective equipment and disposal of contaminated waste
  • hazard infection, control and reporting
  • appropriate protocols and response in the event of an incident
  • knowledge regarding the bases of infection and transmission.

You must be currently employed (paid or voluntary) in Victoria in a customer-facing role to take part. 

You can only participate in one Industry Skill Set program.

Course contents

On successfully completion of this course, students will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the unit BSBWHS332X Apply infection prevention and control procedures to own work activities.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Previous completion of existing, industry specific skill sets at the Polytechnic or any other Registered Training Organisation and/or previous attainment of skills and knowledge may seek recognition of prior learning. Units must satisfy the completion rules of the qualification and be assessed as appropriate by VU Polytechnic.

This skill set addresses the skills and knowledge required to undertake work activities in compliance with organisational procedures that prevent and control infection.

This skill set is for workers in the security sector and education and care sector who require the skills and knowledge to reduce the risk and transmission of infection while carrying out routine work activities in their job role.

Participants will gain the skills and knowledge required to undertake work activities in compliance with organisational procedures that prevent and control infection. It involves implementing standard and transmission-based precautions, identifying infection hazards, and assessing and responding to infection risks. 

Admission & pathways

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you entry into this course. Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.

This course has no specific admission requirements.  However, it is expected applicants will have basic computer skills and must be employed or volunteer in a customer-facing role. Participants will require access to their workplace to complete assessments and confirmation of employer verification in the workplace will be requested or appropriate simulated environment.

All applicants will be required to complete a VET Pre-Training Review, which has been specifically designed for Infection Control Skill Sets (COVID-19). During this process, the selection officer will be able to determine if the applicant will require learning support. This is critical as the course has a component of E-learning and participants will require sufficient English Language Skills to work through the online learning modules, for students who don't have the adequate reading and writing skills another training model may need to be explored.
