Footscray’s many shades of blue

Victoria University’s centenary year will feature a ‘BluScray’ campaign that will see the colour blue highlighting community events, buildings, and public art around Footscray.

BluScray (Blue Footscray) highlights a longstanding link between VU and the colour blue that began with VU’s first predecessor institute, Footscray Technical School.

Photo competition

The community can join in by entering a photo competition, Picturing BluScray, open to both amateur and professional photographers.

Entrants are invited to explore the theme of ‘blue’ while capturing the character and personality of Footscray – whether it is through the blue crabs in Little Saigon’s market, the Maribyrnong River, a fabric in a shop window, or anything else that evokes the idea of BluScray.  

All images entered in the Picturing BluScray contest will be exhibited in a major salon-style exhibition at VU at MetroWest on the Nicholson Street Mall from 30 June – 23 July.

Simon O’Dwyer, veteran photographer for The Age will judge winners and award prizes at the Picturing BluScray exhibition launch on Thursday 30 June.

Needlework project

The blu-ification of Footscray will continue with Threads of Footscray, a large-scale needlework project led by local artist Jessie Deane with up to 40 passionate creators from the community. The resulting artwork will focus on how blue threads through Footscray’s diverse landscapes.

Footscray University Town

BluScray was developed as part of Footscray University Town (FUT), a joint initiative between Victoria University and Maribyrnong City Council to revitalise Footscray and deliver long-lasting benefits to residents, businesses, workers and VU students and staff.
