VU Safety Week

Attend seminars and practical sessions to increase your awareness of work health and safety in research and teaching.

October is national Safe Work Safe Month and across Australia, employers and workers are encouraged to participate and raise awareness of work health and safety.

VU Safety Week was first established in 2013 as a dedicated week for increasing awareness of work health and safety in our research and teaching activities. This year during VU Safety Week we see the launch of:

  • Chemical e-learn
  • Biosafety policies and procedures
  • Safety shower and eyewash guideline
  • Biosafety signage program.

There are a number of training courses and workshops running at each campus.

Speaker: Robert Salcombe, Director of Salutem Safety Pty Ltd.

Robert has been a senior WHS Trainer/Consultant for the last 10 years and has now developed his own company. Robert has some 32 years’ experience in Risk Management and Occupational Health and Safety. Some of the areas of involvement are industrial manufacturing, aged care, heavy machinery, corrections Victoria, local government, health care, mines, retail and many more specialised environments.

Robert has a genuine desire to contribute to a safer workplace community. As both a Safety Consultant and Trainer he brings experience into the safety community with his hands on approach and engaging and informative style.

Chemical management & storage

Hosted by: Carol Gurney
Speaker: Richard Greenwood, RG Chemical Safety.

Richard has over 20 years experience in chemical safety and hazards classification. He has worked on interpretation of and compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety and Dangerous Goods (Storage and Handling) Regulations, and Work Health and Safety Regulations in all states. He also worked in industries ranging from research and training laboratories, to large scale chemical manufacturing plant.

He commenced interpretation of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (the GHS) in 2002. In 2013 he was successful in tendering to present national facilitation and support in their guide to classification of hazardous chemicals and classification to the GHS. This lead to a doubling of the initial program delivery in 2013, and further delivery in 2014.

He trains regularly in GHS, WHS and Dangerous Goods to a broad range of industry and research organisations.

Safety shower & eyewash

Speakers: Dr Faye Zaibak (Biosafety Manager) & Ravi Lal (Engineer), Safety shower manufacturers (speakers TBC)

Learn how to maintain and service safety stations: see demonstrations from industry experts and familiarise yourself with the requirements of the new biosafety safety shower and eyewash guideline.

Wednesday 26 October

Safety signage

Speaker: Dr Faye Zaibak

Learn when and what safety signs are appropriate to identify dangerous situations. Familiarise yourself with the new VU biological lab safety sign and the new Globally Harmonised System of classification and labelling of hazards (GHS).
