Thursday 23 March 2017

In this Women of the World edition of the Game Changers Conversation Series we explore the quickly shifting landscape of people, community and culture in Melbourne's West.

The panel will take a gendered lens to exploring the social and economic impacts of gentrification, the housing crisis and development while visioning how growth and community can co-exist in the 'new west’.

Panel speakers

Facilitated by Karen Jackson, a Yorta Yorta woman and Director of the Moondani Balluk Indigenous Academic Unit at Victoria University, panel speakers include:

  • Mahogany L Browne - International poet, writer and activist
  • Soreti Kadir – Local spoken word artist and emerging writer focused on critical thinking, the strengthening of the Afro-descent diaspora and community engagement
  • Clem Gillings - Director of Community Services, Maribyrnong City Council
  • Jeanette Large – CEO, Women’s Property Initiative.

This Game Changers Conversation is presented in partnership with the Footscray Community Arts Centre for the WOW: Women of the World Festival. WOW, a festival of critical conversations, music, film and performance held from 23 - 25 March, celebrates women and takes an in-depth look at the remaining challenges to gender equality.

In a Game Changers Conversation first, this event will be held at the WOW Café - lush and inviting pop-up venue on the lawns of Footscray Community Arts Centre. WOW Café offers a free curated program of WOW Melbourne highlights, including conversations, dance sessions, short talks and performances.
