Overview

This unit introduces core chemistry and biology concepts through exploration and application. Students analyse matter–energy relationships, atomic and molecular structures, periodic trends, bonding types, and reaction mechanisms, as well as cellular structures, human body systems integration, and physiological processes. Emphasis is placed on cultivating an investigative mindset and mastery of scientific methods in laboratory and field settings, ensuring ethical and safety compliance. Discipline-specific communication skills are developed through clear reporting of qualitative and quantitative findings.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Comprehend scientific articles and their structure to extract key scientific information and use it as evidence in potential research and lab investigations.
  2. Explain and apply core chemical principles to analyse and predict chemical phenomena.
  3. Outline cellular structures and processes and describe the structure, function, and interplay of major human body systems.
  4. Apply scientific methods by designing and conducting investigations and communicate these explanations clearly and accurately using discipline-specific terminology, conventions and formats.
  5. Participate in an academic community through reflective and critical engagement in academic texts and understanding of principles of academic integrity.
