    Overview

    The unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety issues in the workplace, model cultural safety in own work practice, and develop strategies to enhance cultural safety. This unit applies to people working in a broad range of roles including those involved in direct client service, program planning, development and evaluation contexts.

    Assessment

    For Melbourne campuses

    Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

    Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

    • promoted Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety in the context of at least 1 workplace;
    • researched culture and history, the impact of European settlement, loss of land and culture and the importance of law and kinship, and;
    • evaluated ways to improve communication with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples who may be clients or colleagues.

    Required reading

    The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.
