Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to monitor staff performance within the framework of established performance management systems. It requires the ability to monitor the day-to-day effectiveness of staff and conduct structured performance appraisals and formal counselling sessions.
The unit applies to senior personnel who operate independently or with limited guidance from others, including dedicated specialist staff or operational supervisors and managers.It applies to all tourism, travel, hospitality and event sectors.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each units learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • monitor the effectiveness of at least three staff members in relation to at least six of the following standards of performance:
  • adherence to procedures
  • cost minimisation
  • customer service standards
  • level of accuracy in work
  • personal presentation
  • productivity
  • punctuality
  • response times
  • team interaction
  • waste minimisation
  • provide supportive feedback and guidance for improving standards of performance to above staff
  • conduct structured performance appraisals and formal counselling and training sessions for above staff members, in line with established organisational procedures
  • recognise outstanding performance of above staff members as required, according to organisational policies.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the VU Polytechnic e-learning system.
