Overview

This unit is the first of two capstone units. This unit enables students to integrate their research and clinical knowledge and skills by enabling them to develop a project whilst engaged in a 30-day clinical practicum. Students will engage in the design of a project relevant to clinical practice for example, a service improvement project. The practicum is assessed at readiness to enter the profession across all Speech Pathology communication domains. This placement may take place in a variety of settings completed under the supervision of speech pathology clinical educators. Placements will involve working in services predominantly focused on providing services to child or adult individuals and their families and will typically involve working alongside professionals from other services, such as allied health, welfare and/or education.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Exemplify clinical reasoning and competency in speech pathology assessment and intervention at a standard ready to enter the profession in a predominantly adult or child focused clinical context as defined by the professional standards for speech pathology in Australia;
  2. Critically review the scientific literature related to a contemporary issue in speech pathology practice in Australia;
  3. Contextualise the role and scope of practice of speech pathology in Paediatric or Adult Speech pathology communication domains; and
  4. Design a project proposal with planned data analysis procedures and appropriate consideration of research ethics and clinical governance; and
  5. Authenticate clinical techniques relating to assessment and implementing intervention relevant to situations where individuals may present with Paediatric or Adult Speech pathology communication domains
